The Artist Music Exchange

Posted by: Ricky G

In the days where concert and festival tickets sell out quicker than a red-light bulb sale in Amsterdam, it’s good to know that your favourite artists still care about you.

June 2009 saw the launch of Artist Music Exchange, a division of Live Nation in Europe (Europe first: then the world), where artists can add “recession-busting” tickets for gigs for €15 each.

Okay, so it’s only Central Europe (see Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic) at the moment… That, and it appears to be only ‘comeback bands’ (Limp Bizkit, Lenny Kravitz and Motley Crue)… Oh, and it probably promotes the fact that Lenny Kravitz couldn’t – unsurprisingly – sell out a date in Brno, Czech Republic…

But still, it’s an amazing concept and, if this proves successful, then it is planned to roll out across Europe and gradually across the globe.

Think about it:

Can’t see your favourite band in London because they sold out? Why not book a cheap flight to Slovakia and see them there?

Getting you down that they only tickets available for Lenny Kravitz are in the back row of the Essex Youth Centre? Did someone say road trip to Prague?

Ticket touts got you down with there 750% profit-seeking exploits? Stick it to them, Hungary-style.

I am excited about the prospect of a low-cost ticket site, promoted by the artists themselves, assuming some decent artists get added in the future (there is a rumour of Nine Inch Nails and David Byrne being added).

Unless the ticket touts catch on to this, then every Limp Bizkit gig will be a “sell out”, ensuring the bands see the profits they want, but the fans will – once again – be dogged with over-inflated eBay purchases (although, if you’re a fan of Limp Bizkit, it’s probably your own fault).
