Pork Rolls

Five reasons why I love pork rolls.
1. They are cheap and satisfying. Forget Subway, gourmet sandwiches and all that fancy bullshit. In the midst of a financial recession, for those ofpoverty-stricken university student status or lovers of tight-ass dining there is nothing more fulfilling than dodging hunger at the small price of $3.00.
2. They are found literally everywhere. Who hasn’t seen those seedy Vietnamese bakeries tucked neatly in between train stations, alleyways and busy streets? Who hasn’t seen the questionable OH&S regulated stainless steal carts housing paragons of lunchtime delicacy? Perhaps it’s a toss between food poisoning and satisfying cravings. I take the risk every time and I’m still alive.
3. They are flexible. Ask for chicken and you have a chicken roll, throw away the pork, you have a sandwich roll. Throw away the vegetables and you have a bread and butter (and patê if you know where to get the finest pork rolls) roll. Throw the lot away and you’re back to where you started. See, flexible.
4. They make you appear healthy. With the assistance of a trendy bottle of water, pork rolls fool the untrained eye with the appearance of merely a health conscious person, eating a healthy gourmet sub for lunch. Little do they know, the butter, processed pork and soy sauce is delectably hidden from critical nosy folk.
5. They make great connections. My regular pork roll joint knows me so well, that I don’t even have to remind him or her of no tomato or coriander or salt and pepper. Plus, simply befriending a Vietnamese baker can result in regular pork rolls being “on the house”. It’s a win-win really.
