Outer Hebrides – So Underrated
Posted by: Harrivaldo
Scotland gets bad press at the best of times so believing that a place exists amongst the horizontal rain, haggis and deep fried bars where the sands are golden, the seas are warm and women are Athena-like is less likely than Ben Hilfenhaus being top wicket taker in the current ashes series.
Or so you would have thought…. 2 out the 3 at least.
Made up of 14 islands the Outer Hebrides is an island chain lying off the North West coast of Scotland. Being one of the UK’s first barriers to the Atlantic lows & depressions this leads to huge swells between September & April. Combine this with the warmer waters (relative) the north Atlantic drift brings, the golden sands littering the west coast of the isle of Lewis (pic: dalmore beach, Lewis) and the isolation of a scarcely inhabited bunch of islands and you have an idyllic spot for a weeks surfing.
Don’t forget the Isle of Harris to fill up on those 3 piece suits and baker boy hats either, the home of Harris Tweed.
N.B. beware of the dialect, Scottish Gaelic is on a par with mandarin to pick up.
I've found Crazy Derek's site I think! Surf the Hebrides! http://www.hebrideansurf.co.uk
