Malajube

Now don’t go saying I’m going all high-brow and artsy here. This is a Canadian group who only sing in French. So I’ve no idea what on earth they’re talking about but damn it sounds good! Think of a French Thirteen Senses but with more variability and energy.
Here’s all you need to know:
They’re from Montreal, Quebec and have no close relation to The Arcade Fire.
They cracked it in 2004 with the album “Le Compte Complet”
They play indie rock.
They don’t wear berets on stage. (Shame, really).
Labyrinthes remind me of intimate gigs in small pubs with songs like “333” and “Dragon de glace” kicking along smoothly and making you smile and nod in warm appreciation. Pass the vin please! To see these boys in a large stadium just wouldn’t do their music justice.
The production by David Valiquette is deep and atmospheric which I imagine is following the religious/mortality theme of the album. The French lads also use comedic references and phrases in the lyrics on this album, but if your French is as good as my latin dancing, then you’ll probably never get around to translating those one-liners.
For those like myself who don’t care too much for album themes and prefer just to put the tunes on and let them rub you up the right (or wrong) way, this is a slick album from an internationally-underrated act. Forget reading the American reviews who talk about “crossover potential” and use terms like “francophone” and “sophomore”, Malajube make fine music that more people should hear and that’s all you need to know.
