HDTV – Overrated
Posted by: Mr Pink
I remember the first time I saw a real TV set. Our first TV set (what you might now call Low-definition TV). It was a monster, took up half the room and was a portal into another world of perfect colour and incredible, super-realistic sound.
Yeah, right…
Scratch that, I have a vague recollection of what I think I remember, but that’s been edited and polished and jazzed-up over time. In truth, the memory of that old TV set in my mind is probably nothing like what it was really like. Truthfully, it would be almost invisible now when put next to the luxury picture of a set enabled with HDTV.
But here’s the thing: I loved that old TV set anyway. Imperfect as it was I adored the way it screamed and hissed and crackled like fuck; that thing had a soul which no modern HDTV set could compete with. So what if it had its issues, its aerial was in the right place, so to say, even if the picture was a right let-down.
The thing that bugs me about HDTV – and the people behind it – is the way it’s made out to be essential for the complete viewing experience. In truth, how many nostril hairs do I really need to see in perfectly realistic detail? Surely five is the same as fifteen, isn’t it?
Don’t get me wrong, HDTV is a good thing – who doesn’t want amazing colour and awesome sound? – I just don’t think it’s as essential as the media would have us believe.
